Same-Day Onlays and Inlays with CEREC
Not every crack or chip calls for a crown. In some instances of dental damage, our dentist in Back Mountain will recommend an inlay or onlay to restore the tooth. In the past, dentists had to wait for two weeks or longer for the laboratory to send us your completed restoration. Thanks to our in-office CEREC technology, we can provide onlays and inlays in just one day!
What are Onlays and Inlays?
Like a dental filling, onlays and inlays are used to restore a portion of a tooth that has been damaged by decay or injury. But unlike fillings that are injected directly into the cavity, onlays and inlays use porcelain to fix broken teeth.
Onlays and inlays are indirect restorations, meaning they are created then applied to the damaged area. As a result, these restorations are much stronger and more durable than composite (tooth-colored) fillings that can only be applied to minor chips and cracks. In cases where the cavity is too large for a filling but the tooth is overall healthy, an inlay or onlay is the recommended treatment solution.
There are times when the damage to the tooth is so extensive that a crown is the best option. But in many cases, a tooth can be restored with an onlay or an inlay, which allows the patient to preserve a greater portion of the damaged tooth. These procedures can be performed in a single office visit thanks to our advanced CEREC technology.
