Our Oral Surgery Procedures
At Watkins Dental Group, we perform a number of minor surgical procedures right here in our office. Our dentists are fully qualified to perform several procedures, including bone grafting and sinus lift.
Bone Grafting
Your jawbone is designed to support your teeth. When teeth are lost or extracted, the bone beneath it immediately begins to disintegrate around the socket where the tooth was. Known as resorption, this is your body’s way of concentrating its efforts on your remaining teeth.
The longer a patient waits to get a dental implant after losing a tooth, the more the socket will be diminished by resorption. This compromises the bone’s ability to support a dental implant.
To create the right environment for a successful dental implant, our Back Mountain dentists use a process called bone grafting to reinforce parts of the jaw bone that have been weakened by resorption. During this procedure, a small amount of donated bone tissue is placed in the diminished area. During the healing process, your body will gradually fuse your natural jawbone to the grafted tissue, creating the conditions where a dental implant can thrive.
Extractions
While it’s always preferable to keep your natural teeth for as long as possible, serious dental damage or decay can make this impossible. When keeping a damaged tooth in your mouth risks compromising your oral health, our Dallas, PA dentists may recommend extraction. To keep you comfortable, we administer local anesthesia.
Dental Implant Surgery
Getting dental implants involves a minor surgical procedure in order to place the implant fixture. Visit our dental implant page to learn more about the process.
Sinus Lift
Like bone grafting, a sinus lift is a procedure often performed to prepare the patient for dental implant surgery. That’s because sometimes the sinuses are too close to the jaw for dental implants to be placed. During this procedure, bone is added above the roof of your mouth to make room for the sinus membrane to be moved forward and create enough bone to secure your implant.
