If you’re missing teeth, finding a replacement as soon as possible is critical to maintaining a healthy and functional smile. For decades, Watkins Dental Group has helped patients replace lost teeth with dentures and partials.
Whether you’re missing some or all of your teeth, dentures are a very lifelike and attractive smile restoration. Dentures are an economical restoration that can improve the way you look, the way you eat, and the way you speak.
What Are Dentures?
Dentures are the most common smile restoration for people with missing teeth. These removable prostheses are custom made to each patient’s smile, recreating the natural look, feel, and function of your smile.
In addition to being highly cost-effective, dentures can be implemented based on the condition of your smile and your needs. If your smile is already missing most if not all your teeth, conventional dentures can be made to fit the new shape of your smile. In contrast, if you still have a number of teeth that will eventually be extracted, immediate dentures can be made so that you’re never without teeth. However, this approach can require several adjustment appointments.
Complete and Partials—The Two Types of Dentures
Dentures can be applied to your smile in two unique ways – either as complete dentures or as a partial denture.
Complete dentures (also known as full dentures) replace an entire arch of missing teeth. The base of a complete denture is made from a high-grade acrylic material that resembles your gums in color and texture. As this prosthetic is designed to fit snugly along the alveolar ridge, it creates a natural suction that holds the prosthetic in place. Additionally, the teeth are made with porcelain or resin. Modern dentures look so authentic that observers often don’t even realize that they’re not your natural teeth.
Instead of replacing an entire arch of teeth as complete dentures do, partial dentures (also known as partials) are designed to fill a gap of one or more adjacent teeth. Partial dentures are strong and lifelike, just like complete dentures. Rather than being held in place with a combination of suction and adhesives, partials are kept in place by fastening them to your natural teeth using a metal clip or framework.
